Barry Chambers, 28 April 2001

Drummond made a winning start on their return to Senior One with an emphatic six wicket win over Sion Mills. Sion lost wickets at regular intervals and only Bobby Rao with 41 not out was among the runs. Chris Moore bowled well and picked up 3 wickets for 14 runs, while Wasim Haider took 2-10 including the vital wicket of Sanjeev Sharma who he caught and bowled for 6. Richard Stewart, Brian Coyle and Simon Dunn picked up a wicket apiece as Sion were dismissed for 102. Jim McGranaghan with 14 and Raymond Quinn with 12 were the only other players to reach double figures. In reply Wasim Haider held the innings together with 43*, and he received support from Gregory McDaid 16, Alastair Montgomery 10 and their signing from Eglinton Alastair Spratt with 15 not out. The pick of the Sion attack was Lee McGonigle with 2-24. This win will give Drummond a welcome boost as they attempt to consolidate their position in Senior One. For Sion they know that this year will be an uphill struggle once again.
