Smit Helps Bready Crush The Champions
5 May 2001 Bready continued their good form from last season with a crushing victory over champions Limavady. Batting first they amassed a mammoth 270 for 8 with the leading batsman of last year, South African Wian Smit scoring 108. His 137 ball knock contained 9 fours and three sixes. Most of the Bready teams were among the runs with Peter Allen making 42, Colin Spence 31 and Robert Spence 19 not out. The Limavady bowling attack was severely weakened without Roger Kerr and professional Iftikhar Hussain who arrived after tea and minus his luggage which was lost in transit. Irish international Richard McDaid (right) took 4-48 and Victor McDaid 2-57. In reply Limavady lost Decker Curry run out for 1 and they never recovered from that huge blow. Veteran Ivan McMichael top scored with 27, while Richard and Mark McDaid were the only other players to reach double figures making 13 and 15 respectively, as they managed to total only 92. Left armer Mark Olphert had figures of 3-17, and there were two wickets apiece for Trevor Hamilton and Geoffrey McConnell. Strabane travelled to Drummond and emerged victorious thanks to a narrow 14 run win. Strabane won the toss and batted first making 176 for 6. Irish star Mark Gillespie was undefeated on 78 with brother John getting 38. Professional Pavan Kumar made 20 before he was bowled by Brian Coyle. The best of the Drummond attack were Wasim Haider and Brian Coyle who finished with identical figures of 2-31. In reply it was really a one man show as Wasim Haider scored 122 not out of a total of 162, 14 runs short. He hit 9 fours and four sixes in his innings but received little support with only Alfie Dunn with 12 and Alastair Montgomery 10 reaching double figures. What is remarkable however is that they managed to get so close as they were 79-9, and Haider and Brian Coyle put on 83 runs for the last wicket with Coyle making two before he was run out in the last over attempting to give Haider the strike. This surely must be a record 10th wicket partnership for Senior One cricket - unless of course you know different! Martin Deans bowled well for Strabane taking 3-35, and there were two wickets apiece for Pavan Kumar and Mark Gillespie. Brigade had a crushing 150 run win over Fox Lodge at Beechgrove . Brigade made 227 for 7 in their allotted over with recent retiree from international cricket Gordon Cooke top scoring with 69, which included 4 fours and 1 six. Professional Wajahatullah Wasti made only 9 before he was bowled by a jubilant Stuart Clarke. The other new recruits performed better with Allan Rutherford scoring 38, and the two Brownes, John and Jason making 26 apiece. Mark Mooney had figures of 3-46 and Stuart Clarke 2-37. In reply Fox Lodge crumbled to 77 all out with professional Zahid Javed making 22. Adrian Heywood with 15 and Johnny Heywood with 14 were the only other players to reach double figures. Gregory Wilson took 4-9, and Jason Brown completed a fine debut with 3-12. Donemana collected their first points of the season when they amassed 274-6 with their profession Azhar Shaffique making a magnificent 129 on the excellent Sion wicket. He was well supported by Royal Liver cup final heroes William Porterfield and Roy McBrine who scored 20 apiece, and James McBrine and Dwayne McGarrigle crashed the ball around in the closing stages making 22 and 42 not out respectively. Mark Lucas picked up 3-62 while Raymond Quinn had 2 for 40. Sion were without the injured Bobby Rao and while they did well to reach 192 for 5 they never really threatened the total. Jim McGranaghan scored 45, Aidan Boyle 43, and Richard Long struck an impressive undefeated half century. Sanjeev Sharma was also unbeaten on 29, but it appears strange he was batting so far down the order when chasing such a big score.
