Bready v Brigade

Barry Chambers, 7 July 2001

The only scheduled game in Senior One on Saturday saw Brigade continue their excellent recent form with a convincing six wicket win over rivals Bready at Magheramason. An early blitz by former Irish international Gordon Cooke removed the top three Bready batsmen of Mark Olphert, Wian Smitt and Roly Black, and from that moment on there was no hope for the home side. Wajahatullah Wasti bowled superbly taking 2-12 in his 10 over spell and 3-14 from Jason Brown mopped up the tail. Davy Lecky scored an unbeaten 22 and Peter Allen 23, but they were the only players to reach double figures. In reply Brigade lost the early wicket of David Cooke for 7 but Wasti raced to 48 not out to make the game safe. Alan Rutherford and Gordon Cooke were both dismissed for ducks by Geoffrey McConnell but it was too little, too late. This win leaves Brigade joint leaders with Donemana.
