Donemana v Sion Mills
Barry Chambers, 14 July 2001 Donemana remain joint leaders of Senior One after a 6 wicket win over Sion Mills at the Holm. All credit to Sion Mills and in particular Sanjeev Sharma who put up a gallant effort. Batting first Sion Mills scored an impressive 248 for 5 wickets, easily their highest score of the season. They were given a flying start by Kieran Boyle and Jim McGranaghan who scored 30 in the first 3 overs before both fell to the bowling of Azhar Shaffique for 23 and 11 respectively. This brought together the returning Bobby Rao who looks to have settled his difficulties, and Sanjeev Sharma to the crease. This pair added 104 for the 3rd wicket before Rao was caught off the bowling of Jordan McGonigle for a fine 41. Shay Quinn fell lbw to the same bowler for a duck to leave Sion precariously positioned at 145 for four. However Jason Colhoun and Sharma added 101 for the 5th wicket of which Colhoun made 18. Sharma took control and eventually ended up undefeated on 145 which contained no fewer than 14 fours and 7 sixes. He was particularly sore on Gary Neely whom he struck for 26 in one over alone. This score gave Sion a fighting chance but once again Donemana rose to the challenge. All of their batsmen reached double figures although opener Richard Kee made only 12. Professional Azhar Shaffique struck 50 which contained 6 fours and 3 sixes, and he was given good support by the returning Lexie Boyd who made 69 which included 4 fours and 5 sixes. Junior McBrine was once again to the fore making 64 not out with 9 fours and 2 sixes, and his partnership with Andrew Riddles who scored 30 took Donemana to the brink of victory. James McBrine with 17 saw them home with brother Junior. Aidan Boyle with 3-57 was the most successful of the Sion attack. This defeat leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table but they can take heart from their improved batting performance.
