Donemana v Bready

Barry Chambers, 16 July 2001

Bready threw the league title race wide open with a thrilling 9 run win over joint leaders Donemana. On Monday night Bready totalled 168 for 8 in their 40 overs, a score which seemed about 40 short. Once again the opening pair of Wian Smitt and Mark Olphert laid the foundations for a good total with Mark scoring 42 and Wian 47. Young Trevor Britton getting a rare first team opportunity grabbed his chance taking 3-8 in his eight over spell, including the prize wicket of Smitt whom he clean bowled. James McBrine also bowled very economically taking 2-15 in his 8 overs. The rest of the Bready innings followed the same pattern as Saturday with only two other players reaching double figures, Roly Black 18 and Richard Hepburn 11 not out.

Bready would have obviously been disappointed with this effort but they responded magnificently on Tuesday night as all the bowlers and fielders made Donemana fight for every run. Professional Azhar Shaffique went for 15, and Richard Kee for 10 as Donemana struggled. Indeed when Lexie Boyd and Roy McBrine went for 4 apiece they were in deep trouble. However James and Junior McBrine looked to have salvaged the game with 30 and 29 respectively. Young Dale Olphert struck 27 but it proved to be in vain as they fell 9 runs short of the total. Mark Olphert and Davy Lecky took 3 wickets apiece while Richard Hepburn took 2-25.

This win for Bready means that only 2 points separate the top five teams with all having played 8 games apiece
