Bready v Sion Mills
Barry Chambers, 1 August 2001 Bready missed out on the chance to go joint top of the table when they collapsed in spectacular fashion against previously bottom side Sion Mills. Sion batted first and much like on Saturday against Drummond they recovered from being precariously placed to score 125. Jim McGranaghan made 33 and Mark Lucas 39. Roly Black with 2-6, Geoffrey McConnell 3-12 and Boyd Rankin 3-28 did the early damage. However a strange decision to bowl spinners James Long and Trevor Hamilton on what was clearly a seamers wicket saw Sion plunder 50 runs off just 6 overs which in the context of the game proved costly. In reply Bready got off to the worst possible start when professional Wian Smitt got an absolute snorter of a ball from Sanjeev Sharma and was caught for no score in the first over. Mark Olphert fell to Lee McGonigle shortly afterwards and when play finished on Monday night the game was evenly poised on 17-2. When play resumed Colin Spence and Roly Black looked in no difficulty as they took the score to 82 with a combination of good stroke play and intelligent running. However the reintroduction of Sanjeev Sharma broke the partnership when he clean bowled Roly Black for 24. Aidan Boyle and Lee McGonigle then got in on the act with wickets tumbling at an alarming rate including Colin Spence for 41. With the score on 95-9 Geoffrey McConnell struck a few blows to take the score to 108, but Sharma clean bowled Johnny Long with the last ball of his spell to leave Sion victors by 17 runs. This win takes them to 6 points one ahead of both Drummond and Fox Lodge.
