Sion Mills v Strabane

Barry Chambers, 25 August 2001

Sion Mills ensured their survival when they defeated neighbours Strabane on Saturday. Batting first Sion Mills lost the early wickets of Jason Colhoun and Barry Scott before Bobby Rao and Sanjeev Sharma rescued the situation. Sharma continued his consistent form with the bat making 54 before being bowled by spinner Marty Parkes for 54. Pavan Kumar bowled well and wickets fell at regular intervals. However Rao held the side together with an excellent unbeaten century which contained 14 fours and 3 sixes. Sion finished on 202 for 9 with Pavan Kumar having figures of 4-30.

In reply Strabane were never in the hunt as Lee McGonigle and Sanjeev Sharma bowled 16 overs between them for 21 runs. Pavan Kumar hit 33 and John Gillespie an unbeaten 25 as Strabane scored a disappointing 129-8 in their 45 overs. Mark Lucas had figures of 3-22, and Bobby Rao completed an excellent day taking 3-16.
