Brigade v Bready

Barry Chambers, 25 August 2001

At Beechgrove on Saturday Brigade bounced back from the disappointment of losing their All Ireland semi final to defeat Bready by 4 wickets. Bready batted first and missing Mark Olphert and Roly Black they struggled at the top of the order. Wian Smitt made 28 but the slow bowling of Ivan Nicholl and Wajahatullah Wasti saw them collapse to 89-8. Boyd Rankin showed glimpses of his potential scoring 31 not out and scores of 18 from Geoff McConnell and 16 from number eleven David Cooke saw Bready up to 151. Ivan Nicholl had figures of 4-28 and Wasti took 3-17.

Brigade lost opener Gordon Cooke bowled by his namesake David for 2, but Gregory Wilson promoted to opener struck 30 which had 3 fours and 1 six, and Wasti scored 35 which included 5 fours. Alan Rutherford scored 33 against his old club before being caught behind off Trevor Hamilton. At 127 for 6 Bready were in with a shout but Ivan Nicholl hit 19 not out to guide them home.
