Brigade v Drummond

Barry Chambers, 8 September 2001

Brigade completed the first half of their task of achieving two wins in order to force a play off without any trouble when they condemned a hapless Drummond to yet another season in Senior Two. Drummond batted first in damp conditions and never looked comfortable against the Brigade attack. Chris Moore was trapped lbw by Mark Simpson for 10 and that was the start of a collapse which saw Drummond faltering at 35-6. Wajahatullah Wasti was getting a prodigious amount of turn out of the wicket and he clean bowled Stephen Kelly, Alfie Dunn, Paul Montgomery and Brian Coyle. Stephen McCloskey was also trapped lbw by Mark Simpson. Wasim Haider and Kieran Coyle mounted a mini recovery adding 53 for the 7th wicket with Haider hitting 48 which included 3 fours and two sixes which came in one expensive over from Ivan Nicholl. David and Gordon Cooke shared the last four wickets as Drummond were all out for 94.

This was never going to be enough against Brigade as openers David Cooke and John Brown went confidently about their task. Brown had made 19 and the score was on 54 when he holed out on the deep midwicket boundary to Stephen Kelly off Simon Dunn. David Cooke moved on to 37 which had five boundaries before he went lbw to Wasim Haider with the total in sight. Wajahatullah Wasti struck an unbeaten 26 as Brigade coasted to an 8 wicket victory.
