Killymallaght Shock Coleraine

Barry Chambers
5 May 2003

While no play was possible in the Drummond versus Limavady game or in the Faughan Valley Charity Cup game between Bready and Donemana, Coleraine and Killymallaght managed to complete their rescheduled league game. Credit must be given to both teams and umpires Charlie McElwee and Jimmy McDaid who stayed out in conditions more akin to winter than late spring.

Batting first in a game reduced to 20 overs Coleraine got off to a flier with the exciting talent Tim Chopra smashing 52 off the first six overs before being dismissed by the experienced Raymond Mitchell. He hit 7 fours and a six in his knock. Geoff Lockhart and Anirudh Singh, Coleraine's new professional then took the score well over the hundred mark before being removed by Peter Allen for 39 and 30 respectively. In the end Coleraine scored 140 for 5, a little short of what looked like being their total at the half way mark.

The old adage that catches win matches was certainly true when off the second ball of the Killymallaght innings Gareth McKeegan was dropped by Geoff Lockhart at slip off the bowling of Arshad Sharif, a student at the University, who looks a useful bowler. McKeegan made Coleraine pay with a match winning 74 which had 3 sixes and 6 fours. He was given good support by Raymond Mitchell with 28, and 22 from new signing Don Dougherty. Killymallaght almost threw it away in the last over when needing 2 for victory they failed to score off the first 4 balls. However Nigel McKeegan held his nerve and scored the winning runs much to the delight of his team mates. A great win for Killymallaght, but a major blow for Coleraine in their hope of a promotion challenge.
