Ed
Joyce
Merrion & Leinster
Left Hand Bat
A young cricketer with an immense amount of talent. A prolific run scorer who was
nominated as the most promising young player in 1996 and 1997, he spent last
winter in Australia broadening his experience and honing his talents. He is also
a more than useful bowler but on this trip will act as deputy wicket keeper. His
brother Gus acted in a similar capacity in the Denmark tournament in 1993.
Dwaynne
McGerrigle
Donemana & North West
Right Medium Fast Bowler
The youngest member of the squad who will be eligible again in 1999 but who is
already being earmarked for greater honours in the game. He has recently spent
time in South Africa undergoing specialist coaching as one of a group of young
sportspersons from Northern Ireland who are expected to gain full international
recognition in the future. The only North West representative in the party.
Shane
Moore
Old Belvedere & Leinster
Wicketkeeper & Right Hand Bat
A tidy, agile keeper who, once again, has progressed through the younger age
groups. Kept well on last year's U 18 tour to Scotland and Durham and showed his
prowess with the bat with a gritty performance to earn a draw in the two day game
with Scotland and his attacking flair in the one day game with Durham. Another
multi-talented sportsman he captained the Irish Schools Rugby XV to victories over
Wales and Scotland during the winter.
Joe
Morrissey
Merrion & Leinster
Right Fast Medium Bowler & Left Hand Bat
'Big Joe' first came to prominence as a promising fast bowler at Under 15 level.
Since then he has developed his batting and is now in the genuine all rounder
class. A permanent member of his club first eleven, he is very enthusiastic about
his cricket and his selection for this trip is reward for the time and effort he
has put into developing his talents.
Michael
O'Herlihy
Merrion & Leinster
Right Hand Bat & Off Break Bowler
Another of the three members of the Merrion Club in the party, Michael is another product of
the youth system having gained representative honours at U13, U15 and U18 levels.
Earned his place by his batting performances on last season's U 18 tour of
Scotland and Durham. He bowls off spin bowler and hopes to fulfil his ambition to
play in South Africa by helping the team qualify for next year's World Youth Cup.
Kevin
O'Malley
Old Belvedere & Leinster
Right Hand Bat
A talented, stylish batsman whose performances for his club first eleven in 1996
earned him his place in the squad. Yet another who had played for his province
and country at the younger age levels. Began his career as an all rounder but now
prefers to concentrate on developing his batting skills. A good fielder in any
position with safe hands and a strong throwing arm.
Ian
Johnston
Manager
The Irish Cricket Union Coaching Development officer who has worked closely with Mike Hendrick
since his appointment to put in place coaching structures for the benefit of all
players with the potential to play international cricket. A former international
who claimed the prize scalp of Imran Khan in a Nat West fixture he is managing the
team for the first time having attended four previous tornaments as coach. Well
suited to his new role and ideally suited for making decisions which will affect
the future of the tournament.
Mike
Hendrick
Coach
The former Derbyshire and England bowler who captured 70 wickets during his test
career was appointed National Coach in 1995. Since then he has concentrated on
raising the profile of the senior team and led them to success in last season's
Triple Crown and European Cup competitions, narrowly missing out in qualifying for
the 1999 World Cup with their fourth place in the recent ICC trophy in Malaysia.
Is looking forward to his first IYT and continuing his success with the squad
gaining a place in the 1998 World Youth Cup by a top three slot in Bermuda.
Ray
Daly
Assistant Coach
A former senior international, Ray has been involved in coaching Leinster Youth
squads for a number of years. His involvement with this squad began in 1995 when
he accompanied the Ireland Under 16 group to a tournament in Wales. Last year he
coached the Under 18 panel on their tour to Scotland and worked with the players
during their winter sessions in preparation for this trip. An accomplished
batsman in his playing days he now devotes his time to coaching and chairing the
Leinster Schoolboys Committee who administer and organise youth cricket in the
Dublin area.
