Report

Ireland began their 2000 Youth World Cup campaign with an 8 wicket defeat by hosts Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Ground in Colombo. Sri Lanka took less than 24 overs to overhaul Ireland's total of just 135.
Batting first, Ireland slumped to 27 for 5 in the 17th over as the Sri Lankan opening bowlers obtained considerable sideways movement from the wicket. However, Ryan Haire (right) and John Mooney brought some respectability to the Irish effort with a stand of 67 before Mooney was run out for 34. Haire went on to make 39 before being bowled by Weeraratne.
Mubarak and Daniels opened Sri Lanka's innings in dramatic style as they took 64 from the seven overs bowled by Ireland's seamers. Andrew White's off-spin sloed them down somewhat, but the dimunitive Daniels was unbeaten on 72 from 85 balls when Sri Lanka passed their target.
According to Team Manager Ian Johnston "Our batsmen were amazed at the amount of work their bowlers were putting on the ball. The quicks were cutting their fingers over the ball and achieving big deviation and their spinners put plenty of 'revs' on the ball. Our quicks aren't quick enough and swing counts for nothing out here - they just watch it go by and latch on to any width you give them."
