European Under 17 Championship 2001
Ireland Defeat Hosts In European Under 17 Opener
Ian Callender IRELAND'S Under 17s and Under 13s both made winning starts to their European Championship tournaments yesterday. In Denmark, the Under 17s dismissed the host country for 139 and won by six wickets with 11 overs to spare while in the inaugural Under 13 championships in Holland, Ireland bowled out Scotland for 89 to record an emphatic 90 runs success. The pace bowlers led the foundations for victory in Denmark with Ballymena's Alan Coulter the only one of six used by captain William Porterfield who did not take a wicket but seven overs for just 13 runs were the next best thing. Bangor's Paul McKenzie and player of the match Kevin O'Brien, son of Ginger, the former Irish international, each took three wickets and Andrew Riddles, Lee Brolly and John Pryor shared the other four as Denmark were dismissed in the 49th over. The only complaint from manager Alan Neill and coach Brian O'Rourke were the number of wides bowled on the narrow matting wicket. The total of 36 extras - exactly twice as many as the highest scoring Denmark batsman - included 28 wides, although they paled in comparison to the 46 extras conceded by the Danes. They bowled 37 wides! When Ireland batted, Neil Lyons was dismissed in the fourth over but a second wicket stand of 35 between Porterfield and Johnny Neill put Ireland back on course. Although they lost three wickets in nine overs, Eoin Morgan and Pryor came together in the 21st over with the score on 78 for four and their unbroken partnership of 62 gave Ireland a winning start.
