Four members of the Irish team en route to the Intercontinetal Cup finals in Namibia spent the night on the floor of Gatwick Airport after they missed their flight to Windhoek. Their connecting flight from Belfast had been delayed for three hours and so they missed their connection. Meanwhile the others members of the party had flown in from Dublin and departed on the Air Namibia flight.
The four Northern Ireland-based - vice-captain Kyle McCallan, along with Andrew White, Greg Thompson and Peter Gillespie - were unable to find a Hotel at Gatwick when they finally arrived. After their exhausting ordeal there they moved on to Heathrow, from where they hoped to fly via Germany to Namibia on Thursday evening. The quartet will thus arrive in their Windhoek headquarters two days behind schedule.
An exhausted McCallan told BBC Sport:
"We could not find a hotel in Gatwick when we finally arrived, and we had to try and sleep on the airport floor. We moved on to Heathrow and are now awaiting a flight to Frankfurt which is due to take off at 2245 on Thursday night. We will hopefully arrive on early on Friday morning Namibian time. But the way things have gone at present, I'll not hold my breath. It's an under-statement to say that it's not been the ideal preparation for Sunday's game.
"At present we are absolutely exhausted. When we do arrive we will have to catch up on some sleep then do a bit of light training. Instead of having three days to acclimatise, we now have only one. Obviously, the whole mess will have a knock-on effect on the rest of the team. But come Sunday, whether batting or field, we will do the best as we possibly can."
