The ICC Winter Training Camp team registered its third win out of three yesterday beating a Northerns XI by five wickets in a one-day game at the LC Oval in Pretoria.
It was a case of the front-line players in both disciplines doing the business for the ICC WTC as opening bowlers John Mooney of Ireland and Netherlands' Mark Jonkman (right) made an impact early on, while each of the top five batsmen passed 30 to make sure that Northerns' total of 237-8 off 50 overs was achieved with five wickets and 11 balls to spare.
Jonkman struck first for the ICC WTC, removing Heino Kuhn and Ian Naidoo, both caught by Kevin O'Brien for just four runs each. Then Mooney joined in, taking the wicket of Farhaan Behardien before Northerns managed its first good partnership of the day. Alwyn Viljoen and Abner Letsie put on 97 for the fourth wicket before Kenny Carroll got rid of Viljoen, caught and bowled. Mooney ended up with figures of 3-45 from his ten overs while Jonkman took 2-34. O'Brien and Sunil Dhaniram picked up a wicket each as they restricted Northerns to that very getable score.
In reply, ICC WTC got off to a solid start with Irish pair of Carroll (30) and William Porterfield (32) putting on 52 for the first wicket. Carroll scored at exactly a run a ball before he was caught by Kuhn.
ICC WTC wicketkeeper Ashish Bagai of Canada made a quick 44 while O'Brien chipped in with 36, again in quick time. Dutchman Dan van Bunge constructed a more circumspect knock, making an unbeaten 52, anchoring the ICC WTC innings and bringing the side home.
ICC WTC's fourth match (out of a total of eight), is tomorrow (Friday) against the same team in the same venue and no doubt they will be very keen to keep their 100 per cent record going.
The ICC Winter Training Camp involves 24 players, four from each of the top six Associate Members, in seven weeks of intensive mental and physical coaching on all aspects of the one-day game. Top coaches including former Test players Rod Marsh, Kepler Wessels and Gary Kirsten have been available to impart their knowledge and expertise on the players, overseen by head coach Tim Boon. This is the second year the ICC has run the camp which takes place in the hpc (high performance centre) in Pretoria.
