In a T20 night challenge match played under floodlights at Belgrano Athletic Club last night, the South combination simply proved too strong for their opposition from the North. On the back of the historic three day match, won by South, but where North where competitive for good periods of the game, the quickfire version of the game proved to be right down South's alley.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, South got off to a poor start, losing dynamic all-rounder Lucas Paterlini in the first over. But an assured third wicket partnership of 78 between man of the match Martin Siri and Bernardo Irigoyen all but rested the game away from North. Siri made a scintillating 54 off just 43 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes, while Irigoyen weighed in with 35, made from 30 balls with 2 fours and a six. This partnership led South to a decent total of 161 for 8 off their 20 overs, setting a target a little over 8 runs per over.
North were always going to rely heavily on captain Alejandro Ferguson and all-rounder Gary Savage to have any chance of winning, especially after the late withdrawal of Hamish Barton from their lineup. But South continued to seem to have Ferguson's number, caught behind off Casime, and when Savage was smartly caught in the covers by South skipper Billy MacDermott off the gentle outswing of Miguel Rowe, the writing was pretty much on the wall.
In the end, North stuttered to 99, their last wicket falling with four balls remaining in the innings. Rowe ended with 2 for 18 in his four overs, while David Mauro snapped up two wickets in two balls to take 2 for 10. In the end a comprehensive victory for South, to add to their big 8 wicket win last weekend in the traditional three day match.
Perhaps the only real highlight of the night for North was the performance of teenage all-rounder Pedro Arrighi, who bowled tidily for figures of 1 for 19 in 4 overs, while also chipping in with 13 not out. South's Martin Siri was deservedly named man of the match for his innings of 54.
