South American Championship 2009 logoThe South American Championship starts in Sao Paulo, Brazil, tomorrow, and the Argentina A squad will be intent on reclaiming the South American title after a few barren years at the event. First played in 1995, the South American tournament in Brazil will be the 8th time this event takes place, although the first time in Brazil.

In the previous seven events, Argentina won the first three, then Argentina A took up the baton to win the following two. The last two tournaments were won by an invited Guyana Masters team, but this 8th championship has back to its roots, and will include four teams...Brazil, Argentina A, Chile and Peru, involving the four countries who first founded the event 14 years ago.

The Argentine Cricket Association have announced a twelve man team to travel to Brazil, but they will face stiff opposition from the other competing teams who have steadily improved over the years, and are now all involved in full regional competiton as well. However, the South American Championship is not an official event in the sense that ICC player eligibility criteria does not apply.
