There was an air of inevitability as the day began, with Canada facing a daunting target to win
and a difficult task of batting out a full day to earn a draw. They did nothing to allay this
feeling in the first hour, as they lost wickets with shocking regularity and set up a
comprehensive Kenyan victory.
Thomas Odoyo was first to strike, plugging back nightwatchman Zameer Zahir's off stump with a ball that seamed back. Then it was time for Hiren Varaiya to bamboozle the Canadians with a spell that included two wickets in as many overs and the wicket of Canadian dangerman Sunil Dhaniram. Ashish Bagai and Nitish Kumar were both gone for ducks and Canada limped to 157 for 7 at the lunch break with essentially no chance left of saving the match.
The bright spot on the day for the home side was Abdool Samad who made a case for himself opening the batting (after being batted at number 5 in the first innings). He played a perfect combination of patient defence and aggressive scoring shots and scored 87 runs off 152 balls, with 72 of those runs coming from boundaries! Canada's last hope was gone when he was adjudged to be leg before wicket in the second over after lunch leaving them eight down with only bowlers left to bat.
Kenya wrapped up the tail quite easily from that point on, and Canada were all out for 198, meaning a 247 run victory for Kenya, and a maximum 20 points from the fixture. Kenya's top bowler in the second innings was definitely Varaiya, who scythed through the Canadian middle order in the morning and finished with figures of 6 for 45 from 20.3 overs. Steve Tikolo was an obvious choice for Man of the Match for his twin centuries, amassing 327 runs total and leading his team to victory. He won't be dropped from the team again in the near future.
The result leaves Kenya at the top of the table on 23 points from two matches, while Canada will rue their missed chance in the Netherlands as they languish second from bottom, with just three points from three matches. The two teams will have a day off now and then reconvene on the north -west ground here at Maple Leaf on Wednesday for the first of 3 ODIs.
