Another summer another competitive campaign from Donemana but this one is likely to be filed under “galling” in the Holm club's annals.
The Tyrone lads hit the ground running this season with a huge win at Strabane Park on the opening day and that seemed to fire them up. Eglinton burst the bubble somewhat when posting an unlikely win up there but Richard Kee's side recovered their composure and were soon back in the thick of the action.
They reached the senior cup final at the same time as they went top of the league and all seemed set fair for a big campaign before the Under-19 World Cup qualifiers intervened. Donemana knew it was going to be this way of course and the club made reps at the start of the season to have their crunch game at Limavady played at a time when they had Ryan Hunter and Andy McBrine available.
The Holm side wouldn't have known then that they were going to make the senior cup final as well but whatever happened regarding the Roesiders' fixture, that fortnight was to be the turning point in a season that had looked as though it could go anywhere.
The rest you know but Donemana pulled the stumps at the end of the season convinced that they had been wronged. Their professional this season, Kamran Sajid, had big boots to fill but he did a good job making 894 runs at an average of over 40 and also claiming 41 wickets at just over 18 runs apiece.
The supporting cast wasn't bad either, Junior McBrine and son Andy both going over the 600 run marker with Ricky Lee Dougherty and Hunter closing in on 500 and Dwayne McGarrigle and James McBrine hovering around 400.
Junior topped the bowling averages yet again with 43 wickets at just over 18 runs each while Jordan McGonagle with 24 and James McBrine with 22 followed in behind Sajid. Andy McBrine missed those pivotal games but still contributed 18 wickets and it is widely believed that the all-rounder is now being monitored by at least one English County side.
As always the club's Intermediate and underage sides continued to thrive and all in all it has been a good year for Donemana but no doubt they themselves feel things could and should have been better. It could be interesting to see what sort of reaction that generates next time.
