KILLYCLOONEY
It was to be an in and out summer for Killyclooney but for a club that has lost just about an entire senior team over the past three years its an achievement in itself that they have managed to remain competitive at this level.
The hard work and dedication of a number of people always sees to it that there are plenty of youngsters around and the quality of players of the calibre of Mark Gordon, James and Alan Colhoun and skipper Richard McMorris usually means that they win their share as well.
They started slowly this year losing their first four matches in league and cups before recovering to post back-to-back wins against Burndennett and The Nedd but like a lot of other clubs in the division their rhythm seemed to get upset by poor weather and inactive weekends.
The net result was a joint sixth place league finish but the returns weren't that bad, particularly in the batting. Alan Colhoun topped the charts with more than 500 runs at over 28 each, headed by his 123 in an unlikely win against Ardmore, while Gordon was next in having made 407 at over 21 a time. James Colhoun with 335, skipper McMorris (321) and Sammy McElhatton (305) all went over the qualifying mark in a solid showing.
While the bowling was a little less prolific it wasn't all doom and gloom. Messrs Gordon and McMorris showed their all-round prowess, the former with 25 wickets at 23 and bits while the captain had 21 at 22 and some. Make no mistake about it, Killyclooney is one of those clubs that seems to roll with the punches and I'd be happy to bet that they'll win their share again in 2012.
