Following a highly successful 2011 campaign, where Downpatrick claimed their first piece of silverware in over a decade (in the form of the Ulster Shield), the Strangford Road men, led by accomplished all-rounder James Magowan, will be looking to better last season’s 3rd place finish in the NCU Senior League 1.
Their ultimate goal will of course bepromotion to the Premier League. Muhammad Farrukh returns to The Meadow for his third season as club pro. “Fez” as he is more commonly know, will be looking to further improve on the tremendous performances he had last season, including five centuries and countless important wickets.
One of the most important “in-house” appointments was that of veteran Colin “Jute” Magowan as assistant coach to Fez. Jute has a tremendous cricketing history, and it will be this experience and knowledge which can be used to hone the skills of cricketers young and old at the Strangford Road this season.
With the off-season acquisition of former Saintfield all-rounder John Wheeler, coinciding with the rise to prominence of youngsters such as Justin Rea, Ben McIlroy and Michael Carson, Downpatrick now has the capability of mounting a serious challenge in all competitions this season.
