IN-DEMAND Preston Mommsen could join the exodus of Saltires stars heading south of the border.

The Carlton batsman is on trial at Leicestershire this week along with fellow Scot Richie Berrington.

Mommsen took part in Tuesdays 2nd XI Trophy match against Lancashire and is also featuring in the current 3-day Championship match against the same opponents. (Update - he took 3 wickets late on the second day)

The South African-born batsman has attracted the interest of several county sides after a string of sparkling displays for the Saltires last season.

He rattled-up 408 runs in the 2011 CB40 campaign at an average of 58 a record bettered by just four county stars.

Saltires coach Pete Steindl declared: Im sure Preston has the attributes to make it as a professional cricketer with a county and Im delighted the opportunity has arisen for him to go down there this week.

Ive been keen for him to get a chance to show what he can do and its better for him and us that he is playing a good standard of cricket than training and netting with us.

Mommsen has linked-up with Leicestershire on an informal basis unlike Berrington who is on an official one-month loan deal.

Kyle Coetzer (Northants), Ali Evans (Derbyshire) and Freddie Coleman (Warwickshire) already have deals south of the border.
