SCOTLAND Lions may have ended their season without a win against county opposition but they can at least reflect with some satisfaction on their final contest against Northants.

Having toiled on the opening day when the county scored 303-8 on a placid track at Desborough CC, the Lions dominated day two with their most productive day for a while with the bat.

Richie Berrington’s century was the headline act but Ewan Chalmers contributed 86 while Craig Wallace recorded a personal best at this level, reaching 90.

Their efforts allowed the Scots to declare with a healthy lead on 469-7 and hopes were high when Gordon Goudie made the breakthrough before the close.

The prospects of that elusive first win rose further when Berrington and Safy Sharif reduced Northants to 40-3 early on the closing day.

However, frustration followed as an unbroken stand of 261 between trialists James Kettleborough and Josh Tolley, who both hit centruries, saw the game peter out as a draw.

Sharif was Scotland’s most successful bowler with three wickets in the match but this was a game where bat emphatically dominated ball.
