Definitely a 'Curate's egg' season for the Anglesea Road outfit as they combined a fine run to the final of the Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup with a last day escape from relegation.
Their strength in years gone by has been the depth and quality of their entire squad, but those traits were sadly lacking during 2012, with only 4 or 5 players making any sort of meaningful contribution.
The club produced some real 'Jeckyll and Hyde' cricket - when they were good, they were certainly good, but when they were bad, they were truly dreadful.
The club missed Tyrone Kane and Patrick Tice for most of the season - the youngsters experiencing diametrically opposite degrees of fortune in Australia.
On the batting front, the club managed 13 fifties and four hundreds during the season - one of those hundreds was the quite brilliant 170 by Ben Ackland which went a long way to ensuring their Senior One status in the crucial clash against Clontarf.
In total Ackland scored 382 runs at an average of 25.47. The batting honours however went to John Anderson who made 673 runs at 51.77, with his highest score being an unbeaten 110.
Anderson enjoyed a successful 2012 and gained senior international honours where he was one of the few players to emerge with his pride intact following the series against South Africa A.
Former Irish international Dom Joyce wasn't anywhere near his most prolific but still managed a respectable 452 runs at 30.13.
Profesional Tim Lang flattered to deceive and despite looking a formidable proposition with the bat, rarely delivered the goods, with the noteable exception of the Irish Cup win at home to Civil Service North. His tally of 551 runs at 34.44could, and indeed should have been much better.
The bowling stakes contain primarily the same names as the batting, with Anderson completing a fine all-round season with 20 wickets at 16.95 .
Ackland had their best bowling returns taking two five wicket hauls as he topped the wickets aggregates with 24 wickets at 17.29.
Joyce's medium pacers claimed 23 wickets at 21.82, while the only player worthy of a mention is Damian Poder who managed 21 wickets at 20.81.
There's no doubt Merrion's Christmas list will include a potent strike bowler, and if they can get the best out of the players already on the books, then there's no reason to expect another dabble with relegation.
Given the small margins in the Leinster league between success and failure, a quality bowler and a decent start to the season will go a long way.
