SALTIRES recruit Matt Machan made his mark with a maiden century on just his third international appearance yesterday.

The Sussex batsman, one of four English-born players on Scotlands South African tour, struggled in the T20 defeats to Highveld Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders.

However, he showed his true class with a superb 104 on the opening day of Scotlands two-day clash with North West Dragons in Potchfestroom.

Machan, 21, was forced to work for his runs after the Scots lost the toss and were sent in on a damp track at Senwes Park.

It was a measure of his form that the next highest run scorer was Josh Davey with just 32 as Scotland were bundled out for 222 in their first innings.

Machan had prophetically tweeted on the eve of the match: Not made a big score yet but its coming. Im feeling good.

But the Brighton-born batsmans century wont go down in the record books as none of Scotlands tour matches have full cap status.

The Dragons had reached 135-4 at the close with Majid Haq claiming two wickets.

Coach Pete Steindl paid tribute to Machans technique and temperament after the Sussex mans first Saltires century.

Steindl said: It was an impressive innings in tricky conditions.

Matt showed great temperament and his shot selection and execution were clinical.
