SCOTLAND coach Pete Steindl last night ordered his batsmen to get greedy as they bid to set up a victory chance against North West Dragons.

Steindl watched in frustration as his bowlers toiled throughout a hot day in Potchfestroom yesterday.

The Dragons made 341-8 before declaring 41 runs behind the Saltires first innings effort.

Scotland reached the close on 5-0 and will need to score quickly if they are to have any chance of forcing a win on the closing day today.

Steindl said: “We’ll not get ahead of ourselves in terms of setting targets but it is important for a few more guys to spend time in the middle.

“We batted well in the first innings and I want to see a few guys get greedy tomorrow.

“If they get a start they must go on and make it count.”

If Steindl was happy with Wednesday’s batting effort he was less pleased with yesterday’s shoddy show in the field.

“It wasn’t out greatest day, to be honest. We were a bit sloppy and missed a few opportunities to put more pressure on their batsmen.

“The bowlers ran in hard all day but they lacked a bit of patience in terms of sticking to our plans.”

Stoneywood-Dyce paceman Gordon Goudie was the pick of the bowlers with two scalps while Northants wicket-keeper David Murphy impressed with the gloves.

Steindl said: “Gordon set a decent tone in the morning and put the ball in good areas.

“I was also impressed with David Murphy who kept well and showed good energy levels to help keep the guys going.”

Earlier, Majid Haq, on 93no, was denied the chance to go for a century when skipper Preston Mommsen, as expected, declared on Scotland’s overnight total of 387-9.
