It is perhaps fitting in this week of Halloween that we look at the horror story of Bangor in 2012.

There's little good news for the Upritchard Park club who suffered relegation for the second successive season and now find themselves plying their trade in the third tier of NCU cricket in 2013.

It's hard to fathom just how quickly the side has fallen - they were Premier league champions as recently as 2004. The stats don't lie though - they have only won three games in the past two seasons, and the present crop of players is neither talented or committed enough to be playing at the top level.

They weren't helped in their plight by the absence for nearly the entire campaign by former Irish international batsman Mark Hutchinson - he managed only three appearances and the club badly missed his usual volume of runs.

It's a sobering thought to remark of the 22 players used, 13 averaged single figures, and top of the tree was Ryan Law who managed 416 runs at 23.1, scoring 4 of the 9 half centuries made by the club.

Andy Nixon was next making 377 runs at 19.8, with two fifties and made the highest score, 96 against Holywood - one of their two wins during the season.

Chris Burns made 309 at 19.3, while the two others worthy of mentions are Jacob Kwelu 223 at 18.6 and Ricky McLarnon who scored 195 at 12.2.

It saddens me to say that if anything the bowling stats make for more depressing reading than the batting!

Ryan Murphy topped the pile with a very modest 16 wickets at 27.6, while Andy Nixon also managed 16 at a relatively expensive 36.3.

Ryan Law claimed 15 at 30.7, and Chris Burns 12 at 28.8, while Jordy McKeown was next with 9 at 31.3.

What next for Bangor? Relegation may just be the catalyst that the club needs to regenerate. Surely pride has to kick in at some stage and hopefully a fight-back will be on the cards for a club steeped in their tradition.
