Alexei Kervezee again starred as the Netherlands concluded their tour of India with a six-wicket victory in the sole Twenty20 against the England Performance Programme XI in Pune. Having hit 96 against the same opposition in their second 50-over match on Friday, Kervezee's quickfire 80 drove the Netherlands on as they overhauled the EPP's total of 144 in only 17.3 overs.
Having been put in to bat by dutch captain Peter Borren, several English batsmen made starts, but were prevented from accelerating as the Dutch regularly picked up wickets. Neither Michael Lumb nor Alex Hales survived the powerplay, the former caught off the bowling of Michael Swart for 16 and the latter off the medium-pace of Tim Gruijters for 15, whilst Craig Keiswetter managed only 8 runs before being bowled by Pieter Seelaar. James Taylor and Gary Ballance sought to rebuild, bringing the total to 100 by the 15th over, only for them both to fall in the space of two balls.
Ballance hit three consecutive fours off Ashan Malik before being stumped on 26, and Taylor was trapped LBW by Seelaar having made 29. A late flurry of boundaries from the in-form Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes, including back-to-back maximums in an unbeaten 27 from 13, lifted the English to a passable total of 144.
The Netherlands' chase got off to an inauspicious start as Michael Swart departed for a first-ball duck, courtesy of the left arm spin of Danny Briggs and the safe hands of Michael Lumb. But this early breakthrough was made to look increasingly self-defeating as Kervezee, as next man in, embarked on another rampaging run-spree. The Worcestershire batsman provided the bulk of a 108 run second wicket partnership with Stephan Myburgh, hitting 13 fours and a six on his way to 80 from just 44 balls.
Kerverzee was eventually caught in the 13th over off the bowling of Briggs, whose figures of 2-30 were the best of the English attack. Jade Dernbach put an end to Stephan Myburgh's more circumspect innings of 35 from 37 in the next over, yet by then only 23 runs were needed and the Dutch seemed in no mood to dawdle. Despite captain Peter Borren falling for 8, run out by Stokes with 11 still required, Mudassar Bukhari and Wesley Barresi knocked off the requisite runs in quick time, Barresi clearing the boundary to bring the match to a suitably emphatic end with two and and a half overs to spare.
