A Timeline of Irish Cricket

1656 Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell orders the destruction of all bats and balls. This is now generally thought to be a reference to hurling though the origins of the reference are uncertain.
1792 Grand Challenge match played in Phoenix Park between Colonel Lennox of Coldstream Guards and Major Hobart's All Ireland team.
1825 Ballinsloe Club founded
1830 Formation of Phoenix Cricket Club
c1830 Belfast Club formed - it was a leading Club for almost 30 years before folding
1835 Earliest reference to Dublin University Cricket Club though believed to be in existence since 1820
1836 Lisburn CC founded
1849 Downpatrick CC founded
1851 Waringstown CC founded
1855 Ireland play first International against the Gentlemen of England. Ireland won by 107 runs
1857 North Down CC founded
1858 Ireland play MCC for the first time and win by an innings and 10 runs
1859 North of Ireland CC formed. The Club became Belfast Harlequins and then Civil Service North of Ireland CC in 2004
1864 Sion Mills CC founded
1874 Cork County C.C. founded
1875 Northern Cricket Union of Ireland founded
1877 TH Hanna took a hat trick in his debut match against I Zingari, the first hat trick for Ireland.
1879 Ireland draw their first match with Surrey, first match against a County.
1879 First Irish tour of Canada and USA.
1880s Advent of Landlord and tenant wars and founding of GAA. began to retard growth of cricket in Ireland
1888 First International v Scotland. Ireland won by an innings and 26 runs
1888 Donemana CC founded
1888 Derry Union formed. Subsequently renamed as North West Cricket Union in 1907
1890 First Match between NCU and Derry Union which the NCU won
1890 First Interprovincial series won by Leinster
1890 Embryonic ICU began
1893 Bob Lambert capped for the first time. He went on to earn 52 caps in an Irish career that lasted 38 years
1894 First match against a Test playing Nation - South Africans. Lost by 9 wickets. Featured debut of one of the early Irish Greats TC Ross.
1902 Ireland matches awarded first class status for first time. Played 4 first class matches on a tour of England.
1904 Ireland beat South Africans by 93 runs at the Mardyke, Cork. First win against a Test Playing Nation
1907 Ireland play their first home match against a county - v Yorkshire at Woodbrook, Bray. Lost by an innings and 1 run
1909 Annual match against Scotland began
1911 Ireland play their 100th match - a draw with Scotland at Hamilton Crescent.
1919 Formation of Leinster Cricket Union.
1923 ICU as we know it today founded
1923 Ireland defeat Wales in their first match winning by an innings and 23 runs
1924 Annual match against MCC began
1926 George McVeagh capped for the first time. He went on to gain 21 caps but was also capped for Ireland at Hockey, Squash and Tennis. A true all rounder.
1928 Eddie Ingram capped for first time. Finished career with 48 caps scored 1628 runs and took 151 wickets. Also played for Middlesex between 1938 and 1949.
1928 Ireland play their first match v West Indies. Three day game which Ireland won by 60 runs
1929 Jimmy Boucher capped for first time. He went on to gain 60 caps and take 307 wickets. Later Hon. Secretary of ICU from 1954 to 1973.
1938 Formation of Leinster Women's Cricket Union and first official women's match in Ireland
1938 Ireland play their first match v Australia losing by 61 runs
1951 EDR Shearer scores first century for Ireland at Lord's
1956 Formation of Munster Cricket Union.
1956 Ireland play their 200th match - again a draw against Scotland, at Edinburgh
1958 Alec O'Riordan capped for first time at 18. Gained 72 caps in all and scored 2018 runs and took 206 wickets.
1959 Ossie Colhoun gained his first cap. He went on to gain 87 caps out of 88 matches in succession. Finished career with 190 wicketkeeping dismissals.
1969 Ireland dismiss West Indies for just 25 at Sion Mills and win by 9 wickets.
1973 Ivan Anderson hits the highest ever score of 198* against Canada in Toronto. In all scored 3,777 runs in his 86 matches.
1974 Derek Scott took over from Jimmy Boucher as Honorary Secretary of ICU - a post he held until 1997.
1974 Born in Nyasaland Simon Corlett gained first cap for Ireland and went on to earn 73 caps taking 233 wickets.
1979 Ireland play their 300th Match - a draw against Sri Lanka at Eglinton
1980 Ireland enters the Gillette Cup (Nat West Trophy from 1981)
1981 Formation of Irish Women's Cricket Union
1982 North of Ireland win the inaugural Irish Senior Cup beating Leinster by 14 runs
1984 Dermott Monteith retires as the leading wicket taker with 326 wickets in 76 matches over 20 years.
1988 Irish Women appeared in Women's World Cup for first time in Australia
1991 Ireland play their 400th match - a draw against Free Forresters at Lancing College.
1993 Ireland becomes a member of ICC
1993 The Triple Crown series began involving Scotland, Wales and England NCA
1994 Garfield Harrison (Northern Cricket Union) appointed as first Development Officer in Ireland. As an Irish player he gained 118 caps with 2765 runs and 140 wickets.
1994 Ireland competes in its first ever ICC Trophy finishing 7th in 20 countries
1994 Ireland enters the Benson & Hedges Cup
1995 First appointment of a National Coach - Mike Hendrick.
1996 Ireland become the inaugural winners of the European Championships
1996 Stephen Warke, first to reach 100 caps, retires with the highest run aggregate of 4275 runs in 114 matches.
1997 Ireland defeat Middlesex by 46 runs. First win against a County in a competitive match. WJ (Hansie) Cronje made his debut for Ireland in this match at Castle Avenue Dublin
1998 Ireland play in their first U19 World Cup in South Africa
1998 Brian O'Rourke appointed as the first Development Officer in Leinster
1998 Ireland play their 500th match - a loss by 3 wickets to Denmark at The Hague
2000 Ireland play, and win, first women's test match against Pakistan in College Park, Dublin
2003 Appointment of first Chief Executive for Irish Cricket, Peter Thompson
2004 Ireland play in the inaugural Intercontinental Cup
2005 Ireland win the Intercontinental cup defeating Kenya in the final by 6 wickets in Windhoek
2005 Ireland play their 600th match against Denmark at Bangor - a win by 73 runs. Kyle McCallan becomes the highest capped Ireland player 122 caps
2005 Ireland are beaten by Scotland in the final of the ICC Trophy which was staged in Ireland for the first time. Ireland qualified for the World Cup in the West Indies in 2007
2006 Ireland granted One Day International status and play first ODI against England at Stormont
2006 Ireland became winners of all titles at European level from Under 13 to Full. First ever country to do this
2006 Ireland beat Gloucester away in C&G; Trophy. First away competitive win over a county
2007 EJG Morgan first to score a double century for Ireland Ð 209* v UAE at Abu Dhabi. EJG Morgan and AC Botha added 360 for 3rd wicket. Record partnership for any wicket for Ireland.
Ireland participated in World Cup for the first time. Qualified for Super 8 Stage as a result of tie with Zimbabwe and win over Pakistan. In Super 8 stage went on to beat Bangladesh and as a result qualified for LG full ODI table. First competitive wins over Full Test countries.
Won 2nd successive Intercontinental Cup. Beat Canada by Innings and 115 runs at Leicester.
2008 Ireland played 32 matches, record for one year - played 29 matches in 2007. AR White (100), AC Botha (100) and WK McCallan - first to 200 - reached cap milestones.
Ireland won European Championship for 3rd time. Held in Dublin.
Ireland qualified for first time for the World Cup 20/20 through a qualifying tournament held in Stormont.
Ireland won Intercontinental Cup for 3rd successive time, beating Namibia by 9 wickets in Port Elizabeth.
