Danes defeat Jersey by four wickets to claim fifth place

At Farmers’ Field today (Thursday), Denmark defeated Jersey by four wickets in the play-off for fifth and sixth places. Chasing 104 the Danes somewhat stumbled, but a resolute and unbeaten 21 from Christian Peck-Thorsted saw his side home.
In a match shortened to 36 overs-a-side, the Islanders had collapsed to a precarious 9 for 4 in the morning, Fahzan Ahmed bowling beautifully with the new and swinging ball, taking all four at a cost of just 17 runs.
There were also impressive spells from Saad Ahmed, who got through his full spell taking 2 for 17, while Peck-Thorsted conceded only two runs off the bat during his six overs of off-spin.
Although Jersey did not rally to post a commanding total, in no way did they capitulate as against the Dutch yesterday: Will Southall and Thomas le Lievre both batted for more than an hour, while the last five wickets added 80 to drag the hosts up to an under-par, but perhaps defendable 103.
Indeed, when the Danes had slipped to 17 for 3, with Alex Cooke (3 – 21) and Aiden McGurie (2 – 30) among the wickets, a home victory wasn’t out of the question, but a couple of decent partnerships were all the Danes needed to reach their target.
Khizar Javaid duly obliged and stayed with his captain as they added 36 for the fourth wicket, while Saad Ahmed complemented his bowling earlier in the day by dominating the unbeaten stand for the seventh wicket, making 21 of the 24 in only eleven minutes.
This was a much-needed victory for the Danes, who desperately wanted to bounce back following their defeat to Guernsey yesterday, and they will be pleased that several of their junior players stepped up to the mark today in the absence of the more established Thomas Brown.
Jersey, meanwhile, can take immense pride in the way they recovered from their own traumas to sorely test another established 1st Division nation: if Scotland had not recovered so magnificently on Tuesday, one would think that their tournament could have unfolded very differently indeed.
