Switzerland finish second as they get no favours from Finland
SWITZERLAND beat Luxembourg by four wickets in their final game but Cyprus’s win over Finland was enough to deny the Swiss the title and keep them in Division Four.
Aseem Nasir set up the victory with five wickets for 10 runs as Luxembourg were bowled out for 88 and Switzerland, knowing wickets didn’t matter, just the pace they got them, lost six but took only 15.1 overs to win the match.
Nasir completed his man of the match performance by top scoring with 26 off just 21 balls, while Sanjeevan Theaver hit five boundaries in his 24, off 18 balls in the rush for victory. Nitan Gandhi took three of the first four wickets to end with 15 for the tournament, pipping Nasir by one for the leading wicket-taker.
The batsman of the match was William Heath who scored 43 out of 68 before he was seventh out, caught by Kamran Muhammad but none of his team-mates reached double figures, Anand Pattabiraman was second top scorer with seven when he ran out of partners in the 39th over.
The highest partnership was just 16, for both the fifth and eighth wickets as the Switzerland bowlers maintained the upper hand.
Switzerland had 12 overs before lunch to try and win the match but Gandhi struck twice in his first two overs to slow them down and only 23 came off the first five overs.
They were still 16 short of victory when the umpires took the teams off for lunch. It took only another 20 balls to finish the match but the Swiss then had to sit and watch the Finns collapse to Cyprus on Happy Valley 1 and leave them in second place, not very happy in victory.
