Quick Haag allrounder and captain Henk-Jan Mol has won CricketEurope’s Dutch Player of the Year poll, taking nearly 30 per cent of the popular vote to claim the title by a clear margin.

Mol finished eight percentage points clear of VRA and national captain Peter Borren, with ACC’s Mohsin Ghaznavi in third place.

Ghaznavi, Borren and international star Tom Cooper all had spells in the lead during early stages of voting, but then Mol surged to the front and established an unassailable lead.

Overall, the poll is an interesting reflection of the tension between club and national loyalties, with the former evidently more important with many voters. Three of the top four – former international Daan van Bunge finished in fourth place – did not appear in the national side in 2010.

Mol’s victory is all the more remarkable given that his Quick side had a miserable season, winning only four of their sixteen matches in the Topklasse and then losing their relegation play-off series to Dosti Amsterdam, although that outcome is currently subject to challenge with Quick claiming that their opponents fielded two ineligible players.
