North v South Matches 2014

The South had much the better of the annual encounters winning both the Under 11 and 12 games and being in a dominant position in the Under 14 game when rain brought a premature halt to proceedings at Stormont.

A Man of the Match performance by Tim Tector scoring 43 runs and taking 4 for 16 ensured the Under 11 clash went the South’s way.

Cian Rock, Craig MacKay and David Vincent all scored 20’s ensuring that their 144 was never challenged.

The recent rain forced the relocation of the Under 12s match to Cranmore, the lower pitch at Osborne Park, and here it was Gavin Hoey who top scored with 51 not out for the South.

In reply the North couldn’t match his scoring rate and were 60 runs short when they ran out of overs.

At Stormont the South batted first, as they did in the other two games, and it was another familiar name in Irish youth cricket, Anders, this time the Ian variety, who led the way with 78 runs.

The Northern reply did not look like challenging the South’s 205 and at 45 for 6 there was little doubt as to who the eventual winners would be.

However the 40 over Youth Regulations demand that 16 overs be bowled in the second innings to constitute a match and with only 14 bowled when the rain called a halt to proceedings the match was abandoned with No Result.

As ever the turnout of Parents and supporters at these games would put many club sides to shame.

The logistics of organising 3 simultaneous underage games is huge in terms of the Coaches involved, travel, grounds, umpires, catering etc. especially so given the recent bad weather so it was excellent to see so much cricket played for the benefit of our young players North and South.
