Mayor Tom Tate has welcomed Ireland's national cricket team to the Gold Coast ahead of its Australian competition debut tomorrow.
The Irish team has been in the city for a training camp this week as part of its ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 preparations and tomorrow, will take on the Queensland Bulls at Kerrydale Oval, Robina in a 50 over match.
The International Cricket Council brought the Irish team to Australia with the assistance of City of Gold Coast.
Cr Tate met members of the Irish team today along with coach Phil Simmons (former West Indies player) and said he was delighted to see the team on the Gold Coast.
"It's an honour to see the Irish team in our city enjoying our beaches and other attractions and I wish them all the very best in their match tomorrow," he said.
"One of the key aspects of our Gold Coast Sport Plan is to attract more high performance sports teams to the city.
The Irish team's training camp is actually the 18th to take place in our city over the last 12 months, which have brought a combined total of $3.6 million into the local economy.
"We'd love to see more international level cricket played on the Gold Coast and certainly we're working towards that."
Parts of the team's visit to the Gold Coast will be filmed for a television show, the ICC's Cricket 360, which is broadcast to 45 countries and in Australia via Fox Sports.
During their last two appearances at the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007 and 2011, Ireland managed to beat traditional cricketing nations Pakistan and England respectively.
The Kerrydale match is the first of four one-day contests to be played in Australia, with the others to be staged in Brisbane and Canberra.
The Queensland Bulls will be at full strength as this will be its final hit-out before the domestic one-day competition begins.
President of the Gold Coast District Cricket Club, Jeff Pfaff, invited everyone to come and watch the game.
"It's school holidays so it's the perfect opportunity for families to come and enjoy some quality cricket," he said.
The match commences at 10am.
