Ireland and North Down player Nick Larkin is poised to make his debut for New South Wales against Victoria on Friday.
The 24 year-old played twice for his adopted country at Stormont this summer against Sri Lanka A, but after scoring 0 and 16, was left out of both the series against Scotland and the subsequent acclimatisation tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Despite a horrific run of injuries and withdrawals from the squad Down Under, Ireland Coach Phil Simmons and his selectors opted not to draft in either Larkin or John Anderson, appearing to put an end to their World Cup ambitions.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Larkin accepted that it would take a major U-turn by Ireland for him to figure in the World Cup.
"I think technically I still could be , but at the moment it's not my focus. I'm not too stressed about Ireland at the moment.
"It'd just be if there was an injury or a spot available I guess I wouldn't say no."
While the World Cup may come too soon for the Northern Knights and North Down batsman, an extended run in the New South Wales side would surely prove a great boost to his career and development, and a future place in the Irish top order may not be too far away.
