The round robin stage of World Cricket League Division Three ended today in Kuala Lumpur, with Nepal and Uganda celebrating promotion to WCL2, which will be held in Namibia in January.
Uganda were promoted after beating the rather hapless Bermuda side today at the Bayumas Oval. Batting first after winning the toss, Bermuda were bowled out for 140 in 39.5 overs, with Frank Nsubuga, Henry Ssenyondo and Davis Arinaitwe all taking three wickets.
Roger Mukasa then led the Ugandan run chase, scoring 86 from 68 balls before he was out. The seven wicket win was completed in under half the required overs, enabling Uganda to book their tickets to Windhoek.
Meanwhile, over at the Selangor Turf Club, hosts Malaysia were batting first after winning the toss against Nepal. Anwar Arudin batted well for them, scoring 69, but only two other batsmen were even able to reach double figures as Malaysia were bowled out for 142. Paras Khadka was in good form with the ball, taking 4-20 from his nine overs.
Nepal lost Subash Khakurel early on in their reply, but soon recovered as Naresh Budayair and Gyanendra Malla put on 69 for the second wicket. Rain brought an end to the match with Nepal on 89-2 after 25 overs, with the D/L par score being 53, giving Nepal a 36 run win.
All this meant that the game between Singapore and the USA would decide who would join Bermuda in being relegated to Division Four. Singapore batted first after winning the toss, starting their innings with a 98 run opening partnership between Arjun Mutreja and Chaminda Ruwan.
Those two fell, for 44 and 48 respectively, in quick succession, but 72 from Anish Paraam enabled them to post 225-7 from their 50 overs. Rain interrupted the USA innings in the 24th over with them on 101-2, well ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis par score. After the resumption though, things didn't exactly go their way.
Resuming chasing 200 in 42 overs, Steven Taylor brought his fifty up with a six just after the resumption, but he was out for 56 soon afterwards. The wheels then came off their innings and they were bowled out for 167 to lose by 32 runs, meaning that they will be relegated to Division Four along with Bermuda. It is notable that these two teams are the only ones not to play a regional 50 over tournament in recent months.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with the relatively meaningless play-off matches. Uganda will play Nepal in the final, Malaysia will take on old rivals Singapore in the third place play-off, whilst USA and Bermuda will play each other for fifth place.
