Russ Degnan and Andrew Nixon are producing a daily blog throughout the tournament. Here's the first episode, highlighting today's action.
Dawlat Zadran's 3-17 constitute his best-ever figures in a T20I, with Sharafuddin Ashraf claiming 3-27 on his T20I AND T20 debut.
Netherlands limp to opening defeat, Netherlands 130 all out in 19.4
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
5:28 PM Well the damage had already been done really, but wickets continued to fall as the Dutch chased an increasingly improbable asking rate. Bukhari loses his off stump to a perfect inswinging yorker from Hassan, van der Gugten holes out trying to force a slower bouncer over the long on boundary, and Michael Rippon is last man out, caught pulling a slower ball to captain Stanikzai at midwicket off the antepenultimate ball. A fighting victory for Afghanistan then, who came back hard in both innings to win comfortably in the end.
Wickets fall in desperate scramble, Netherlands 109/7 after 16 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
5:09 PM The Dutch chase coming apart at the seams here as the climbing asking rate starts to take its toll. Borren stumped charging Sharafudin, who lobs a slower delivery wide and past him, van der Merwe holes out slog-sweeping to deep midwicket, and Seelaar stumped in similar fashion t6 h5s captain, and Barresi falls victim to a woeful decision, "caught behind" off a leg side wide.
Dutch stumble in middle overs, Netherlands 84/3 after 11 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
4:54 PM Big breakthrough for Afghanistan just as the Dutch were kicking into gear, Cooper looking to clear the long off boundary off Hassan off Sharafudin for 36 as he was looking to take the chase by the ears. Swart falls victim to a brainless runout in the next over and Borren holes out in the over thereafter.
Borren gets a reprieve though, Sharafudin overstepped and Borren's called back. Another free hit goes begging, but Sharafudin's over the line again and Borren deposits his second chance over long on for six. Huge confusion in the scorers box now as it's not clear if they ran a single whilst Borren thought he was out. It's all happening here.
Cooper and Swart look to accelerate, Netherlands 56-1 after 7 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
4:30 PM The loss of Myburgh's done little to check the scoring, Swart and Ben Cooper's partnership now worth 39 from 25 balls.
Cooper missed out on another free hit, but made good next ball by smashing Ashraf over long off for six, and giving Nabi the same treatment in the next over, first depositing a straight drive over the sight screen and then heaving another over long on. Disciplined fielding from the Afghans keeping a lid on the running though.
Myburgh falls early, Netherlands 17/1 after 3 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
4:13 PM A tidy start from Zadran, giving away just one boundary off his first over, though was lucky that Swart missed out on a free hit. A straight six off Nabi in the next over from Myburgh takes the pressure off somewhat, but not enough as a mishit swipe in Dawlat's next over drops easily into the hards of the Afghan captain coming round from mid off.
Netehrlands chasing 163 to win
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
3:59 PM Stephan Myburgh and Micky Swart to open for the Dutch then, and they've given themselves something to chase to say the least. Dawlat Zadran to open the bowling, and the Netherlands will be looking for a quick start.
That late flurry of runs takes Afghanistan to their highest T20 total against the Netherlands.
Big finish from Shenwari and Zadran, Afghanistan 162/7 closed
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
3:49 PM After a great start from the Dutch, Shenwari and Zadran have smashed Afghanistan to a respectable total here, their partnership of 55 from just 23 balls bringing Afghanistan back into the game.
Ahsan Malik's last over was just extraordinary, bringing two wickets from the first two balls - a fine caught and bowled to dismiss Zadran and van der Merwe taking a great catch on the midwicket boundary to do for Shenwari, then Shafiqullah came out swinging with a huge six over square leg first ball, but then Mirwais Ashraf gave Malik and van der Merwe another wicket looking to follow suit. Shafiqullah finishes off in style though, with a booming straight six to take Afghanistan to a total of 162; not insurmountable of this track certainly, but a lot more than the Dutch will have wanted to concede given their start.
This fifth-wicket stand between Shenwari and Najib is Afghanistan's highest in T20Is, beating Shahzad and Shenwari's 41 against Ireland in 2012.
Shenwari and Zadran lauch counterattack, Afghanistan 138/4 after 18 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
3:32 PM Shenwari and Zadran hitting out in style now, van der Merwe and Malik coming in for punishment as Afghanistan enter the death overs with wickets in hand. Zadran smashes van der Merwe into the crowd three times in an over and the crowd is starting to wake up. Still a job to do here though.
Shenwari and Nabi partnership broken, Afghanistan 104/4 after 16 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
3:23 PM Nabi and Shemwari looking cautious, milking the spinners for ones and twos behins square. Shenwari looks to get cute with a reverse sweep off Malik and Barresi takes an excellent diving catch across at short fine leg which must have come of the arm guard given the lack of interest in the appeal, we all though it was out in the press box.
Next over there's no doubt though, as Nabi holes out off van der Merwe to Malik at long on. Najibullah Zadran still Dutch cheers with a huge straight six ioff the next ball to get off the mark. Wickets doing little to calm the Afghan aggression here.
Nabi and Shenwari rebuild, Afghanistan 81/3 after 13 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
3:10 PM Nabi still going hard, sprays an outside edge off Bukhari over backward point for four more, and running hard to force twos from pushes into the on side. Ugly runs but a good partnership for Afghanistan now, the Dutch still on top though.
Afghanistan hit out in middle overs: 59/3 after 10 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
2:58 PM Magal's brief fireworks came to end after a brisk 29 from 22, LBW to van der Merwe for the former South African's first wicket in Orange. Michael Rippon gave away just a couple from his first over, but Mohhamed Nabi looks to be taking on the role of reckless hitter, going inside out to deposit van der Merwe over the long off rope, and smashing Pieter Seelaar back over his head in the next over.
Dutch keep things tight in the powerplay. Afghanistan 34/2 after 6 overs
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
2:42 PM Mangal leading a bit of a fightback now, taking ten off van der Gugten's second over including a towering straight six, Bukhari keeps thing tight at the other end though, unlucky not to have a third as a leading edge from Mangal drops just wide of him. Just 34 off the powerplay and two down. Pressure will be on for the Afghans from now on.
Dutch start strong, Afghanistan 19/2
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
2:32 PM A tidy opening over from Michael Swart, conceding a run only off a misfield at point, then Bukhari strikes with his fourth ball, splaying Shazad's stumps with a length ball that nipped back through the gate. A flick off the pads through fine leg from Mangal off Bukhari the only boundary, but Bukhari bags another in reply, spearing one into the Afghan captain's pads.
Netherlands won the toss and elected to bowl
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
1:56 PM So Peter Borren calls correctly and invites the Afghans to have a bat. The last time the Dutch chased successfully was against Ireland in Sylhet, that was admittedly a very successful chase. The pitch looks to have been improving all day, and the Dutch captain feels confident of chasing pretty much anything. Within reason presumably.
Afghanistan and the Netherlands have met in each of the last three World T20 Qualifiers, with the Dutch having won on two occasions and the Afghans once. Across all three formats the balance is the other way, with Afghanistan enjoying a 7-5 advantage. This has developed into one of the great rivalries of Associates cricket.
Dutch and Afghans prepare for their opening match
Bertus de Jong at The Grange, Edinburgh
1:37 PM Back to the Grange for today's second game, Netherlands taking on Afghanistan. A few clouds about and it's a bit chilly, but no threat of rain in the air. George Munsey and Kyle Coetzer have demonstrated the quality of the batting track as Scotland chased down the UAE's 109 in a mere ten overs this morning. Players are warming up and all sorts of officialdom on the pitch as we await the toss.
Munsey is awarded the man of the match
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
12:35 PM 12:35 PM Unsurprisingly Munsey is awarded the man of the match for his Blistering 62 off 36 balls which really was a sight to behold. Great stuff and Coatzer played his usual elegant input with support from MacLead at the end.
Scotland crush UAE with 10 overs to spare.
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
12:28 PM 12:28 PM And that's the game. Scotland cruise to an 9 wicket victory over UAE surpassing their low total of 109 with half the overs still available.
Crushing win to get the Scots off to a flying start in their campaign.
UAE had no real answer to the Scots bowling and certainly no answer to the onslaught of Munsey's powerful batting.

Scotland lose Coetzer. 96/1 after 8 overs
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
12:14 PM Scotland continue to score at will finding the boundaries at with ease.
At the end of the power-play the openers had pummeled 76 off the six overs. Munsey is the more innovative of the two getting some unorthodox sweep shots to the boundary and also dispatching a reverse sweep to bring up his 50 from 29 balls.
Coetzer has just got out backing away to hit through the covers and missing. Bowled for 39, which included nine 4's off 16 balls
When he passed 5 Kyle Coetzer, Scotland's leading run-scorer at this level, became the first Scottish batsman to post 500 runs in T20Is.
Scotland 40/0 after 4 overs
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
11:56 AM After a cautious first couple of overs Scotland have opened up the scoring rate thanks mostly to Munsey who has raced away to 14 off 15 balls. Not to be out done Coetzer has caught up by hitting three 4's in a row and five in total from Grurge's second over.
Scotland going at 10 per over at the moment. Easy street.
Spinners doing it for Scotland
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
11:34 AM A sharp performance from Scotland there without many blemishes in the field or with the ball has kept UAE to a modest total of 109.
The spinners doing it for Scotland as both Leask and Watt take three wickets each from their full allotment of overs.
A required run rate of 5.5 for Scotland to win should be easy for their strong top order to overhaul.
UAE crash to all out for 109 from 18.1 overs
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
11:25 AM And that's the end of the UAE innings as Guruge is run out at the non strikers end by a direct hit from Berrington fielding in the covers.
All out for 109 with 1.5 overs left unused.
A clinical performance from Scotland who kept the pressure on the UAE and kept the wickets tumbling throughout the innings.
With 3-20 and 3-28 respectively, Michael Leask and Mark Watt have both bagged their best figures in T20Is.
You don't get too many ninth-wicket partnerships in T20 cricket, but Tauqir and Javed have just equalled the UAE's best for this wicket in T20Is: 27 by Shadeep Silva and Kamran Shazad against Zimbabwe in Sylhet last year.
UAE 107/9 after 16 overs
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
11:14 AM Tarqir Out caught behind of the bowling of Watt. Great delivery that bounced and took the edge.
The 100 comes up for UAE in the 15th over for the loss of 8 wickets.
Watt claims another caught behind, Javed out 9.
UAE 107/9 after 16 overs
UAE falling away. 80/8 after 12 overs
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
10:58 AM Spin form Leask and Watt has slowed down the run rate and applied some pressure to the scoring before Watt takes the wicket of Shakoor hitting out.
A direct hit from MacLead from the outfield and Patil is given run out after a long look by the TV umpire.
And MacLead is back in the action in the 11th over catching Umair Ali
The Emiratis' lowest total in a T20 Qualifier is 85 against Ireland in 2013 - they should beat that, but their lowest in a T20I (151 against the Netherlands at Sylhet in 2014, curiously also their highest) looks a long way off at the moment.
UAE lose a couple of wickets. 54/3 after 8
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
10:37 AM Another wicket for Scotland as Sharif changes ends, pitches one up and has Shahzad caught at cover for 14.
At the end of the power-play UAE were 41/2
Spin in to the attack and Watt almost has a wicket off his third ball but the the fielder was just a little to far off the deep cover boundary and tips it over for 6.
Leask on at the noorth end takes a wicket with his first ball. Shaiman going for a big one and get caught at deep point.
That second-wicket partnership between Amjad Ali and Mohammad Shahzad may have been short-lived, but at 16 it was the highest for that wicket for the UAE in four T20Is!
UAE 32/1 after 4 overs. Faizan out for 17.
Adam Brook at The Grange, Edinburgh
10:20 AM The UAE have come out swinging taking 12 off the first over thanks to two boundaries from Fiazan Asif.
A run out chance in the next over saw Fiazan make it to the crease safely thanks to his sliding bat but he was caught out at deep square leg in the third over by MacLeod as Evans claims his first wicket.
He's out for 17 with the total on 22.
UAE finding runs pretty easy to come by at the moment.
For those who are interested in such things: there are two kinds of matches in this tournament. Those between Hong Kong, Ireland, Nepal and Papua New Guinea in Group A, and between Afghanistan, Netherlands, Scotland and UAE in Group B, are full T20 Internationals. Any match involving any of the other six countries is not. Both today's games are therefore full T20Is.
Scotland have won the toss and chosen to bowl

Scotland have won the toss and have chosen to bowl and have left out Wallace, Taylor, De Lange and Gavin Main.
Players just finishing their warm ups and vacating the field ready for play to start shortly.
