It was a day that started and ended with frustration at King City, and ultimately led to the second ODI of the Ben Sennik Trophy series being abandoned. After play was not possible yesterday due to heavy overnight rain, the delay continued into the reserve day as the high water table level in the area meant water seeping up through the pitch and leaving it and the run ups very wet.
The morning and early afternoon was spent in drying efforts, and eventually the pitch was deemed fit by the umpires. Play began at 2:30 pm with a scheduled 33 over match to be played.
When play did get underway, it was Canada struggling after being put in to bat on a very challenging pitch. The Kenyan bowlers found movement off the seam - and a bit of variable bounce - in the early going and made inroads into the Canadian batting order. Rizwan Cheema was first to go, not being able to replicate his astonishing innings from Wednesday as he played overtop a Thomas Odoyo delivery that stayed low and knocked back his off stump after scoring just one run. Hiral Patel was gone for 8 after a lovely running catch from Lameck Onyango at cover, and Abdool Samad followed him into the hutch when he was trapped lbw by Thomas Odoyo.
The drinks interval was taken after 17 overs, with Canada's score on a lacklustre 63 for 3, but after the first ball of the 18th over, the skies opened up and sheets of rain poured across the ground. The covers came out quickly enough, but the rain was heavy enough that the already saturated ground had no chance of absorbing all the water, and the match was abandoned with Canada on 63 for 3 from 17.1 overs. Zubin Surkari led Canada with 23 runs off 44 balls and Sandeep Jyoti made 19 from 26 deliveries, both of them remaining not out at the end of play. Thomas Odoyo bowled wonderfully, taking all 3 wickets for 11 runs from 5 overs of work.
So the day ends without a result again, and the series stands at 1-0 Canada with one match left to be played. It is scheduled for tomorrow, but with the rain that has been falling the odds of them playing are not very good. That would mean Canada would win the series, but also leave both teams unhappy as they miss out on chances to gain valuable ODI experience, and important points in the ODI rankings table.
