In the first part of the year the main attraction was the World Cup qualifying competition in South Africa where Denmark's main aim was to remain in division two. With that in mind Denmark took the most experienced side with them knowing quite well that the average age was high. The warm up matches gave some optimism that after the first defeats in the competition itself and an injury list it became apparent that Denmark has fallen far behind their competitors.

The end result became the worst possible case with Denmark not winning a match at all and were consequently relegated to division three. The consequences of this result was soon apparent as national coach Peter Palle Klokker decided to call it a day. This meant together with the financial situation a new approach which resulted in a single post covering all national squads of all age groups. Simon Tolbot was appointed as he has had connections with Denmark before and has shown that he has the ability to bring Denmark back to division two but it is going to be a long and winding road.

On the domestic front 2009 was a different season in the top league. The reason being nine teams were competing in the top league instead of the normal eight. Last year Glostrup won the championship even though they did not have any participating youth team in the league and this was not allowed according to the tournament rules. Glostrup were given dispensation for the year but that meant no relegation was possible. Therefore Herning were allowed to remain in the top league. A well-known Danish cricket correspondent wrote on the Internet that the Danish championship would be decided quite simply from the fact of which team had the services of certain players. This observation was based on the fact that Skanderborg had won the championship three years running with several imports of players of whom now had moved to another club.

As it turned out this observation was correct as Herning won the championship for the first time ever and had done so after an import of the so named players. However the championship was won after a play-off against the defending champions Glostrup. As it has been seen several times before a team were sailing towards the championship but faltered towards the end. The twist of the tale of course is that Herning should have been relegated the year before. Skanderborg without the services of the imported players were now relegated to the first division. Because of the special rules for 2009 only one team could be promoted from the first division and only after a play-off, but Ishoj yet again failed in their bid to gain promotion as they lost to Esbjerg.

While Esbjerg only just avoided relegation they did however make a name for themselves by winning the Danish cup competition in a close fought final against Glostrup. Not only did Hering win the Danish championship, they also won the Danish final in twenty20 competition. The final was held at the same time as the inaugural Nordic 2020 competition was held in Copenhagen with the participation of Norway Sweden and Finland. Norway won the competition after a very close final against Denmark.

Ishoj who failed to gain promotion to the top league, got compensation by winning the Danish championship for the under 13's and the under 18's. This underlines the fact that the cricket development for youth is strongest in eastern Denmark. The under 15 championship was won by a combination team from Herning and Skanderbog. The lack of youth players has meant an upsurge in the use of combination sides in order to play cricket. This is a disappointment but a necessity in a period where it is tough to get young players to play cricket and to maintain these in a game where the competition with other activities is very high.

Not only that but the awareness of the game of cricket has diminished in a society where media awareness is concentrated in money making activities. To counter this the Danish Cricket Association (DCF) officially launched its new Integration Development Project with 14 clubs taking part. The project itself is funded by the Danish Integration Ministry, and is a three year project with number of specific target goals which must be achieved prior to receive further government funding.

As usual Denmark took part in the European Championships for youth teams. The under 19's were in Jersey where the highlight was Denmark's victory over Guernsey in the first match. The under 17's were in Ireland but without much success except gaining much-needed experience. The under 15's were in Scotland and they had the success of beating Jersey who were favourites to win the championship.

Denmark have always lamented the loss of the European Championships for the under 13's essay have always considered this important for the development of cricket in countries where the game is minor. Denmark have therefore continued working with under 13 sides and halve in 2009 taken part in a competition in southern England. There was also the championship for the A teams which happened in Holland where Denmark took part again after a hiatus. Denmark failed to win any matches but they were all closely fought and therefore the Danes gained much-needed match practice on grass wickets.

Looking forward to 2010 the main attraction will be the European Championships in Jersey where Denmark will be fielding a much younger side. The youth teams will be taking part in the European activities as usual and Denmark will be working hard to produce well prepared teams for the events. Domestically the emphasis will be on the work to produce new cricket managers/coaches in order to enhance the development of new cricket players.
