Tournament surprise package Denmark continued their winning ways in the European Under-19 Division 2 Championship with a win over Guernsey today. Meanwhile, hosts the Netherlands picked up their first win, beating Italy.
At VOC, Guernsey captain Ant Stokes won the toss and chose to put Denmark in to bat. It initially looked to be a smart decision as Azaan-Ur-Rehman was bowled by Daniel le Messurier in the third over before a run had been scored.
A 78 run partnership for the second wicket between Saud Munir and Shangeev Thanikaithasan got Denmark back on track, with the two scoring 54 and 57 respectively. Captain Oliver Hald was the top scorer though, scoring 75 from 55 balls to help Denmark reach 219 when he was the sixth man out in the 37th over.
Daniel le Messurier came back into the attack to help polish off the tail, finishing with 4-15 as Denmark lost their last four wickets for just ten runs to be bowled out for 243.
Guernsey scored slowly to start their reply, with 92 on the board when le Messurier was the fourth man out in the 27th over. That dismissal sparked a mini collapse which saw Guernsey lose four wickets for just six runs. They never recovered and were bowled out for 128, losing by 115 runs. Jonas Henriksen was the pick of the Danish bowlers with 4-28.
Over in Deventer, the hosts won the toss and chose to bat first against Italy. Run scoring was slow, with the Netherlands only managing 197-7 from their 50 overs. Captain Bas de Leede top scored for them with an unbeaten 76.
Italy only had two batsmen reach double figures in their reply. Luuk Kroesen was the pick of the Dutch bowlers with 3-21 as Italy were bowled out for 74, losing by 123 runs.
Tomorrow is a rest day in the tournament, with play resuming on Tuesday. Denmark will look to make it three from three when they take on Italy, whilst the hosts will play Guernsey.
