The announcement of the Dutch squad for the World Cricket League Division 1 tournament, beginning on 1 July, contains no real surprises, confirming the selectors’ well-established propensity for consistency.

One piece of good news is the inclusion in the 15-man squad of the county players, Ryan ten Doeschate and Alexei Kervezee, although it remains doubtful how many matches they will actually be available for, given their domestic commitments. This is, therefore, a somewhat high-risk strategy, since their absence would leave the squad reduced to 13 for at least some of the games.

The tournament coincides with part of the Friends Provident Twenty20 competition, with Essex and Worcestershire each playing three matches between 1 and 10 July; in addition Essex have a County Championship game against Nottinghamshire on 5-8 July.

That apart, the squad is largely the same as that which has been playing in the Clydesdale Bank 40 League, minus overseas player Michael Dighton. Nick Statham, who withdrew from last weekend’s visit to Derbyshire and Northamptonshire because of a wrist injury, and Maurits Jonkman, who was unavailable because of work commitments, have both been included, as has the young allrounder Brad Kruger.

Although the competition, which also involves Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, Kenya and Scotland, has no implications for the participants’ High Performance status, it will affect their rankings, and it is also relevant for promotion to the ICC’s global ODI rankings table. If The Netherlands win at least one of their next seven ODIs against their Associate and Affiliate rivals – the match against Scotland on 15 June and the six games in the World Cricket League – and then beat Bangladesh in Glasgow on 20 July, they will join Ireland and Kenya in that global table. The requirement is a winning ratio of at least 60%.

The full squad is:
Peter Borren (VRA, captain), Mudassar Bukhari (ACC), Atse Buurman, Tom Cooper (both VRA), Ryan ten Doeschate (Essex), Tom de Grooth, Mark Jonkman, Maurits Jonkman (all HCC), Muhammad Kashif (West of Scotland), Alexei Kervezee (Worcestershire), Bradley Kruger (Bradford/Leeds UCCE), Pieter Seelaar, Nick Statham (both Hermes-DVS), Eric Szwarczynski (VRA), and Bas Zuiderent (VOC, vice-captain).
