Glorious late summer weather made sure the final weekend was not interfered with as several questions got their answers except two. Herning and Svanholm won both their matches Sunday and remained deadlocked at the top of the league and as the Championship cannot be decided by NRR a replay will take place next Saturday in Herning. These replays are becoming more of a standard as each year becomes a close call. The other question to be answered is the qualification match between second last in the Elitedivision against second place in the first.
Herning had to go and play Glostrup Sunday as these two teams fought out the Championship last year. Glostrup had the bronze medals in the bag anyhow but they wanted to end the season on the up after several defeats in August. Batting first they showed their intent from the start playing in a aggressive mood but none of the top batsmen could hang around long enough to ensure a big score. Instead Glostrup ended on 155 for 9 after 50 overs. Herning soon lost Mogens Christiansen but Carsten Pedersen and Troels Thogersen restored normal service with Troels going for the big shots sweeping with venom. They took the score to 100 before Troels mistimed a full toss but Carsten took over first violin and played Herning to within a stone's throw of victory before being caught. Brother Michael didn't last long but Martin Christensen and Jacob Larsen took Herning to victory.
Svanholm were on paper clear favourites against AB and Svanholm looked in the driving seat as they put on over 100 for the first wicket. Rohit Kaneira hit 84 as Svanholm posted a high score of 248 for 9 in the 50 overs. But AB who had nothing to play for, would not just lie down and die. They fought as best they knew with Naveed Mughal hitting 43 and Omar Hyatt with 44 brought AB close to the target but not enough, with AB ending with 207.
Three teams were involved in the fight to avoid relegation from the Elitedivision Sunday. Norrebro were playing KB and a victory here would get them clear while bottom place Husum were facing second bottom Esbjerg. Husum's chance was a big win to enhance their NRR to gain the qualification spot, while Esbjerg's chance lay more in Norrebro losing.
KB were having a nightmare second half of the season with the bat and the final match against Norrebro was no exception as KB could only manage 109. Perhaps this looked like an easy target but KB's Yassir Iqbal removed the top three batsmen with only 20 on the board. Saad Hafeez then took the scene and together with Islam restored normal service. But close to the target another collapse occurred but Saad made sure of a three wicket victory.
Husum are a stronger side at home and they knew a big score was necessary as they were just 0,04 behind Esbjerg on NRR. Well the Müllers took charge again and took the Esbjerg bowlers to the cleaners as Hauke and Gerrit came together with two wickets down at 37 with Hauke ending on 114 no. while Gerrit made 62 as Husum ended on 263 for three. The telephone was getting hot as Esbjerg need to know what they had to get to stay above Husum. A rough calculation gave them a target of 200+ but despite a fighting 59 from captain Peer Jensen the Esbjerg batsmen failed to deliver and making only 148 it was not enough and Esbjerg had to go down, after being in the top flight for the last 29 years, having never been relegated before and winning the Danish championship three times in 1985,1987 and 1990.
Husum ended second last and will have to play second place in the first division. Saturday saw all first division teams playing. Leaders Ishoj whose position was not secure faced their local adversaries from the past Albertslund who had failed year after year in gaining promotion. Ishoj batted first and were soon in trouble as star batsman Adnan Elahi was caught behind and had four wickets down for only 20. Atif Akthar dug in and kept Ishoj going but wickets kept falling and at 68 for 8 Ishoj's promotion looked in danger. Ishoj's tail stood firm and pushed the singles and waited for Albertslund to bowl wides. Ishoj managed a low 105 of which only 73 came from the bat. This was a target which was within Albertslund's capabilities, but then Ishoj's bowlers were more accurate giving away only 8 extras, as Albertslund lost wicket after wicket and the last five batsmen could only manage 11 runs between them with Albertslund all out for 84. Ishoj's victory gave them outright promotion and they return to Elitedivision after a 12 years absence, although last time they were only there for one season.
The two other teams who were fighting for second place were Kolding and Skanderborg. Both played matches Saturday. Kolding scored 205 at home against Hvidovre who in reply fired 66 off the first 8 overs but then gave too many chances and ended up being 144 all out. This meant Hvidovre ended in a relegation spot. Skanderborg bowled out Aalborg for 97 and needed only two wickets in surpassing. So Sunday saw both teams meeting each other in a match that was postponed from earlier with the winner taking all. But what should have been a close encounter ended up being an anti climax as Kolding's batting folded making only 75 in 42 overs. Remembering that 75 is defendable in Denmark as proved before, Skanderborg began nervously losing 4 quick wickets for 30. However Jesper Hansen and Kamran Mahmood took over and got Skanderborg home. Skanderborg will now face Husum at home on Saturday to decide who plays in the Elitedivision next season.
Saturday saw another curious match in the first division between Koge and KB II. KB are relegated and Koge had nothing to play for but still they made a horrendous 406 for 4. KB bowled so many wides that they couldn't keep the time allotted and gave away 30 penalty points. Koges Australian Scott O'Brien made the seasons highest score in DK with 206 not out. KB made a mere 75 in reply. Hvidovre and KB are relegated to the 2 division and should be replaced by Ishoj II and Fredericia, both of whom have been in the first division before. Both teams, however, have to recognize the costs involved and prove qualification before promotion.
