Well all eyes were on the weather charts Saturday morning as light rain swept Jutland where both play-offs were taking place and play in both matches was delayed due to rain and in Skanderborg also to ground conditions.
In Herning play did get under way two hours late as the rain stopped and luckily stayed away for the rest of the day. The match was reduced to 35 overs when play got under way and Svanholm who had won the toss decided to play safe and bat last in case the rain returned. Conditions were very wet and this hampered the bowlers ability to hold the ball allowing several loose deliveries. Herning's opening pair Michael Pedersen and Troels Thogersen were very effective in punishing the bad balls and soon built up a century partnership in 19 overs. Svanholm's introduction of Hamid Shah to the attack finally got the breakthrough bowling Michael Pedersen. None of the following Herning batsmen dug in as Svanholm's spinners Hamid Shah and Bobby Chawla took wickets but a flurry of boundaries from Hamad Zaman towards the end got Herning to the competitive total of 168 for 7.
Conditions had improved for Herning in the field and Svanholm had no time to relax in chasing Herning's total. Herning's Hamad Zaman was able to swing the ball in the first overs and foxed Rohit Kaniera who was trapped lbw. Thomas Vestergaard came in and together with Zishan Shah Svanholm looked to get on top of the Herning bowlers but Shah was caught on the boundary. This triggered off a middle order collapse thanks to Herning's use of spinners and had Svanholm reeling at 66 for 6. Captain Bobby Chawla tried to restore the innings but when he was unnecessarily stumped the gas slipped out of the balloon and Svanholm were bowled out for 91.
With victory Herning retained the Danish Championship which they won last year likewise from a play-off though against Glostrup.
In Skanderborg play was also delayed due to rain and waterlogged ground conditions but heaps of sand spread out made it possible for play in a reduced match of 40 overs. Husum were put in to bat by Skanderborg who were under normal strength for this qualification match for the right in playing in the Elitedivision. Skanderborg's decision looked like it was paying off as Morten Kristensen medium pacers had Husum in serious trouble at 48 for 5. But Gerrit Müller was still there and together with Kasper Blumenau they played themselves out of trouble and when Skanderborg's second string bowlers came on they plundered the many loose balls from the ball being very wet. Nothing could really remove them as they put on 196 for the sixth wicket before Kasper was finally out in the final over for 78 leaving Gerrit not out on 112.
Husum's 250 for 6 was a tall order for Skanderborg and their best batsman Rizwan Mahmood went on the offensive from the word go striking 25 off 10 balls before being caught. Besides Chr. Peck-Thorsted's 26 nobody could stick around as Skanderborg basically gave up the chase and were all out for 92. Husum will remain in the Elitedivision for 2011 but due to Esbjerg's relegation and being replaced by Ishoj there will be only 2 teams from Jutland in the top flight next year.
The season is not yet over in Denmark with the U19 and U13 Championship finals taking place in the coming weekend followed by the U15 Championship finals the weekend after. That weekend also sees Denmark playing the Club Cricket Conference as part of the preparations for the World Cricket League in 2011.
