Just remembered - Tim Albone is making a film about the Afghanistan cricket team, so he's hardly an independent judge of these things.

I'm in agreement with Roy on this one. Everyone is assuming that the semi-finalists are automatically going to be Nepal, Norway, Afghanistan and Jersey, whilst forgetting that the USA and Singapore are very good sides. As Roy says, Singapore have probably had the best preparation of the teams, and have much more experience of playing on turf wickets than Afghanistan or Norway.

The article in todays 'Times' by Tim Albone which quotes Afghanistan's players as favourites to win the WCL Division 5 is somewhat optimistic. At best they may make the final. More likely winners are the USA, who should be in Division 3 anyway and could win the tournament if they can play with some consistency (not the USA's strong point in previous ICC Trophy competitions) and Norway. All three countries have good all-round teams but overall, at any given level, European teams are generally stronger than Asian ones. Afghanistan are nowhere near the standard of the United Arab Emirates whilst Norway are now, deservedly, in Division 1 of the European competition. Their main problem will be lack of match practice. Three other countries could spring surprises. Jersey have an all-round side (good batting and bowling) and on their home ground should do well. Nepal could do well with a strong bowling attack but they may struggle for runs. The team to watch, however, is Singapore. They are in form, having just beaten Malaysia 3-0 in the Stan Nagaiah Trophy. and have three excellent batsmen (Chetan Suryawanshi, Budhikka Mendis and Chaminda Ruwan) but are weaker in bowling (unless Syed Ali does well). Against this competition, Afghanistan are unlikely winners. If they succeed they will have to play well above their previous standard. Unfortunately, four players, Mohammad Nabi, Nowraz Mangal, Hamid Hassan and Hasti Gul do not make a team.

If the European Championship were a four side round - robin comp involving England, Ireland, Scotland and The Netherlands every two years before the English test series/ODI's v. test opposition begin might be realistic. The English played a few three game series v. Wales a few years back, so timing isn't going to be a huge challenge, and ODI status would ensure England fielded a reasonably strong side.

John - An England A team could work, though the counties have not exactly been fully supportive of England A playing matches during the English season. Though again, I'm not sure they should be playing in the main European Championship tournament.
