Maasland A claimed the inaugural CricketEurope Women’s Regional Indoor championship at the Margriethal in Schiedam on Sunday, avenging their one-wicket defeat by Haaglanden A in the group stage and beating the same opponents by the same narrow margin.

That win by Helmien Rambaldo's Haaglanden A side had set up derby semi-finals between the two teams from the Den Haag area and the two from Maasland. Both were won comfortably by the respective A squads, although the tournament organisers had attempted to ensure that the sides were as evenly matched as possible.

Rambaldo had led her side to victory in the last match before lunch with an unbeaten 45 - the highest individual score of the day - and she was again the mainstay of their innings in the final, bringing her tally for the day to 106 before she reached the compulsory retirement score of 25. This time, however, she did not come to the crease until halfway through the ten-over innings, and there was no chance for her to come back later and add to her score.

Even so, Haaglanden A reached 124 for four, a challenging target for a Maasland outfit which had been dismissed for 89 in the group game. Miranda Veringmeier took hold of their reply by hitting three sixes off consecutive deliveries, although she was then run out off the very next ball unwisely attempting a second run from a rebound off the wall between cover and mid-off.

Denise Prins was still at the wicket, however, and although she retired on 27 she was able to return to share a match-winning last-wicket stand with Marloes Braat, reaching an undefeated 38 as Maasland got home with an over to spare.

Prins had made 75 runs in three innings in the course of the day without being dismissed, and she took the award for Batsman of the Tournament. The bowling award went to Laurien Mol with five for 45 from eight overs, while Shasha Brüning gained that for the best allround performance.

Maasland B confirmed the home region's superiority by winning the play-off for third place, beating Haaglanden B by four wickets. Willemijn Jansen made 38 for the Haaglanders, while for the winners Marijn Nijman made 27 not out and Violet Wattenberg 39. They had won both their group games very convincingly, before coming unstuck at the semi-final stage.

Weakened by unavailability and illness, and with Hannah Hofman out of the tournament after pulling a thigh muscle in the second over of the day, the two Northern Provinces sides struggled, losing all four of their group matches. The A selection registered a decisive victory in the play-off for fifth place, denise Hannema making an undefeated 28 as her side chased down a score of 117 for two for the loss of only one wicket.
