Mark Jonkman reacted philosophically and with dignity on Tuesday to the shock announcement of the results of the ICC’s assessment of his bowling action.
Jonkman, who is Ireland with the national squad, thanked coach Peter Drinnen and CEO Richard Cox for their support during what has obviously been a considerable ordeal, adding that he hoped in time to return their faith in him.
‘In many ways I am glad that the situation has been clarified once and for all,’ the 24-year-old HCC seamer said, ‘and I know exactly where I stand.
‘I am looking forward to the rehabilitation programme, and learning more about my action and how I can develop it.
‘I know there will be some long days and nights ahead with “walk throughs” and video footage, but I am determined to work hard to get this right then return to the national team, and hopefully gain a full time playing contract in due course.’
Drinnen confirmed his own confidence that Jonkman would eventually return to the international scene.
‘This is obviously disappointing news at such a crucial stage of our World Cup preparations,’ Drinnen said on Tuesday, ‘but at least it allows us to have absolute clarity on Mark’s action.
‘Together with Mark, the ICC and a fast bowling consultant (yet to be named – although we are in discussions) we look forward to working hard with Mark over the coming months to rectify this and rehabilitate him fully to the national team after he has been re-tested later in the reconstruction phase.’
