GCB CEO Appointment

Interviews for the post of Chief Executive Officer were held at Lords before Christmas. A substantial number of applications were received and a shortlist of candidates interviewed. Unfortunately, the weather meant that interviews were interrupted somewhat. President Christian Rocca and Financial Manager Ob Bacarese were joined by Richard Holdsworth, ICC Europe Regional Development Manager, for the interview process.

Subsequently, the Board is pleased to announce that Richard Askew was unanimously selected as CEO and has been appointed for a period of 3 years. Commenting on the appointment Rocca said “We are sure that everyone will give Richard their full support and would join us in congratulating him on his appointment. He will be playing a very important and prominent role in the coming years and together with the Board will be key in implementing a number of changes and driving Gibraltar cricket forward.”

2011 Tournament Structure

Following the new tournament structures adopted by ICC and the ranking of the Gibraltar senior national team it has now become imperative to increase the focus of much of the local game on T20 cricket, the format in which Gibraltar will be competing in its quest for promotion back to WCL 8.

The Cricket Committee, under new Chairman Ian Farrell, will be looking at potential formats for league and cup structures. The mid-week T20 league and cup structure will continue as in the past. This has proved very successful and continues to flourish with evidence of this being that Dave Coram came from the mid-week ranks to represent Gibraltar in WCL 8 in Kuwait.

Weekend league and cup competitions will be re-structured for the 2011 season with a T20 league competition being played competitively at weekends. It was felt that there had to be a competition in the longer form of the game and thus a longer format league/cup will also be scheduled.

An addition this season will see a 40 over series of matches being played between two ‘regional’ Gibraltar select sides, on turf surfaces wherever possible, providing the best local players with an opportunity to continue with and improve at the longer form of the game, with a view to representing Gibraltar at Senior and age group level in future.
