Youth Cricket in Gibraltar
Development Programme Over the past few years there have been dramatic changes to the cricketing scene on the Rock. The Sky coverage of the game has exposed many of youngsters to cricket and they are only too willing to embrace the sport. Junior cricket is played in every school in the country, from mixed teams playing 'inter-house' and 'inter-school' Kwik Cricket festivals at junior ages, through to hard ball cricket as the players grow older. There is also a system whereby the most talented and enthusiastic young players are selected to receive additional training and competition, very much an equivalent to the 'district' system in UK county set ups. The best of the country's youngsters are monitored as they play and are eligible for selection in representative teams against touring sides and in European competitions as their performances in trial games improve. This ongoing system of competing for places will be vital for increasing the standard of teams throughout the age groups and eventually into the Senior side. There are currently two full-time Development Staff and an ever-increasing network of teachers helping to deliver cricket throughout our schools. Year on year, the association aims to have one-in-three pupils have access to training and competition. Although not everyone will represent their country, the flexibility that these numbers will give us and the amount of cricket being played will ensure that the sport continues to flourish for many years to come. Women and Girls' Cricket This is a recently introduced and massively expanding part of the game in Gibraltar. Girls learn the game in mixed teams whilst at middle school and then continue with training and competition throughout their senior school years. The intention is to develop links with Somerset and Gloucestershire County Boards and club sides to encourage reciprocal tours to establish and improve standards, leading eventually to participation in European age group competitions and the establishment of a full Women's Senior team.
